Abstract: An intercomparison ("JCOM97') of measurements of NO$_{2}$ photolysis frequencies J(NO$_{2}$) by different instruments has been performed during 09.-27 June 1997 at Forschungszentrum (FZ) Jülich. This experiment was carried out within the frame of the 'Tropospheric Research Program (TFS, Förderschwerpunkt Troposphärenforschung) of the Federal Ministry for Education, Science, Research, and Technology) under the responsibility of the Institute for Atmospheric Chemistry (ICG-3) at FZ Jülich. The main goal was to test the reliabty and calibration of those J(NO$_{2}$) measurement instruments that have participated in the Feld campaign BERLIOZ in 1998 in Berlin-Brandenburg. Three independent absolute measurement techniques all developed at FZ Jülich participated in the intercomparison. First a static chemical actinometer by the institute ICG-2, second a chemical flow-actinometer by the institute ICG-3, and third an actinic flux spectroradiometer by ICG-3. Furthermore, eleven commercial J(NO$_{2}$) filterradiometer (all manufactured and calibrated by Meteorologie Consult GmbH) from different institutions (Fraunhofer Institut für Atmosphärische Umweltforschung Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Institut für Umweltphysik der Universität Heidelberg, Institut für Troposphärenforschung Leipzig, Max-Planck Institut für Chemie Mainz, Forschungszentrum Jülich, Firma Meteorologie Consult GmbH Glashütten) were involved. The two chemical actinometer were chosen as reference instruments because they yield directly measurements of J(NO$_{2}$) in contrast to the radiometer. The other J(NO$_{2}$) instruments were run in parallel at short distance to the chemical actinometer. All Sensors had the saure field of view of 2$\pi$ sr pointing to the zenith. The recorded data were collected in a data archive and evaluated by the Institute for Atmospheric Chemistry. In general the intercomparison showed good agreement among the participating instruments. In most cases a good linearity was observed for solar zenith-angles up to at least 80°. The three absolute measurement techniques agreed within their specified measurement errors and showed no deviation larger than 7%. The filterradiometer showed a consistent calibration with a scatter of 2% (1$\sigma$) and a mean deviation of less than 4% relative to the absolute techniques. Based an the JCOM97 exercise the calibrations of the filterradiometer calibrations can be harrnonized for the field campaign BERLIOZ with an absolute error of less than 7%.
